Sex, dating, and relationships — in chronological order.

In the summer of 2019, I went on a trip to the south of France with my friend Mariah. We were going away to “get some writing done”. We did write a little. But mostly we gabbed. We got on the topic of first loves. Then we talked about the next person we’d met, and one who came after that. I asked Mariah what her number was. She said she had no idea, and started counting. After that, we kept going down the list: I’d tell the story of the next person on mine, then she’d tell me hers. 

On a pebbly beach in Perignon, Mariah told me the story of the fifth person she’d been with, who ended up becoming her first serious relationship. It was such a sad, beautiful love story. When it was over, she went for a swim, maybe to wash some of the memories off. Although unearthing these long-forgotten tales was quite intense, I felt lighter, purified even, as I did so.

By the time we boarded the bus home, we were on Number 8. At some point during that bus ride, Mariah said, “this could be a podcast.” And she was right.

We started publishing episodes 18 months later, and kept up until we put out the final episode in May of 2023. I learned so much from making a sex and relationships podcast about my own life. It laid bare my patterns in dating, and Mariah’s input gave me a whole new way of seeing things.  We also had the chance to interview some fascinating guests. 

We learned a lot about storytelling, and how to keep a long, winding story about oneself interesting to our audience. The feedback we got from listeners was so encouraging, and it kept us going though all 75 of our combined stories.

A note on episode order:

As is probably obvious by now, the episodes are in chronological order. However, you should feel free to skip around as you wish. Each episode is meant to stand on its own, so don’t feel like you can’t listen to Number 9 if you haven’t listened to 1–8. Thanks for tuning in <3
